The loving care of mother Jijabai made Shivaji a great warrior. Gandhi became a Mahatma because of his pious mother Putlibai. Putlibai observed a strict vow wherein she would wait for the cooing of the cuckoo before having food. One day, she waited for a very long time for the cuckoo’s call without taking food. The young Gandhi could not bear to see his mother fasting for such a long time. Hence, he went out of the house and imitated a cuckoo’s coo. Then he came inside and said, “Mother, please take your food now, as we heard the cuckoo.” Unable to contain her grief that her son lied, she slapped Gandhi and cried, “What sin did I commit that a liar should be born to me!” Gandhi immediately repented and prayed for her forgiveness.
